The National Sinfonia in Concert

The National Sinfonia has chalked up an impressive performance in its short life. The debut of the orchestra at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Music Festival was followed by a guest performance at the Smith College Orchestra in Concert and as accompanists of selected pieces of Bizet's Carmen at the Marionettes Chorale's celebrated Christmas Concert. In 2005 the orchestra accompanied the UWI Festival Choir in Vivaldi's Gloria at the All Saint's Church and performed at the inauguration of the President of the Caribbean Union College.

On Sunday 28th August, 2005 the young orchestra will be in Concert at Queen's Hall. The Forty five talented musicians, mainly young players, will perform under the musical directorship of Jessel Murray. The highlight of the evening will undoubtedly be the presentation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 3 with concert pianist Sothie Paul Durasamy.

No stranger to Trinidad, Sothie Paul Duraisamy was born in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia but trained and conducted choirs in Trinidad, including the Clifton Hill Choir, and gave a solo recital at the Naparima Bowl, San Fernando. She has also given solo recitals in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, England and Holland and more recently two piano recitals with her daughter Sonali, in Australia, South Africa, Malaysia and Holland. Her repertoire as a soloist includes Beethoven's Piano Concerto No1 in C major and No 3 in C minor, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Dittersdorf's Concerto in A major.

Kids at the Queen's Hall Theatre Camp

Theatre Camp 2005 a Roaring Success

It has been a challenging undertaking. The traditional three week camp was shortened to two weeks, during which time the Hall was unavailable for two days to accommodate the launch of the World Cup 2007, and spaces were allocated to accommodate the annual maintenance programme of the Hall. The national scare of the bomb in a down town garbage bin and a hurricane threat, did not help but the Manager of Queen's Hall, and Charlene Harris, the Manager of the Theatre Camp, with the cooperation of the parents, and the enthusiastic campers, made it happen. And at the end of the two weeks the stage performance of Andre Tanker's music by 95 enthusiastic thespians spoke volumes.

The Queen's Hall Theatre Camp is an important outreach project to introduce young people to the joys of the performing arts and the work of our best artists. Last year the famed masman, Peter Minshall was honoured with Camp not Calaloo, this year it was Ben Tanker de Lion for musician, Andre Tanker.

The popularity of the 17 year old camp is undeniable; the number of participants was 95 up from 60 in 2004. Its mission is to develop more confident and disciplined persons with a love and appreciation of the magic of theatre and knowledge of our country's heritage in the performing arts.

News & Views - Spotlight from the Patrons of Queen's Hall

The Chairman delivers

At the Annual General Meeting of the Patrons, Chairman of the Board, Astra da Costa invited the comments of the floor members and they came at her, fast and furious. A principal concern was the noisiness of the late comers on the wooden flooring. Well, Spotlight is pleased to report that carpet has been laid down judiciously to assuage the problem to some extent while not affecting the acoustic to any measurable degree. Then the position of the row numbers has also been addressed. We understand that the monitors in the lobby will soon have sound to go with the video to keep the late comers abreast with what's happening on stage and work will soon start on the car park. So Thank You Madam Chairman
