A Calypso Musical at the Hall for 2006
Tony
Hall and David Rudder, two of the country’s finest artists, come
together to present a calypso musical The Brand New Lucky
Diamond Horseshoe Club from February 7th through
February 24th 2006 at Queen’s Hall.
First performed at Indiana State
University in July 2004, The Brand New Lucky Diamond Horseshoe
Club is based on events that took place at an actual bar in Port
of Spain. The original club was situated on Wrightson Road’s Gaza
Strip and operated there until a few years after WW11 when it
was relocated to the corner of Henry and Duke Street down town. Now
a car park, the club was a haunt of seedy nocturnal characters, it
was razed by fire in the mid 1990s. David Rudder had photographed
the site mere days before the fire and his 2000 album “Zero”
included a track in memory of this dubious landmark. Diamond
Horseshoe, the resulting calypso musical provides a slew of
clues as to ‘whodunit’.
The talented and celebrated David
Rudder has written a whopping 19 new songs for “The Brand New
Lucky Diamond Horseshoe Club”. Dramatist Tony Hall has scripted
the musical and directs a cast of talented actors, Errol Sitahal,
Rhoma Spencer, Michael Cherrie, Marvin George, Errol Roberts, Conrad
Parris, and introduces Qwewina Roberts (daughter of the Grandmaster,
Kitchener).
