Sophisticated Soul

Denise WilliamsTHE PATRONS OF Queen’s Hall have the privilege of presenting Canadian Soprano Denise Williams in Sophisticated Soul under the patronage of His Excellency Howard Strauss, High Commissioner for Canada on April 30th, at 6.30 p.m. at Queen’s Hall.

Born in Antigua, Ms. Williams is a crossover artist whose diverse repertoire includes opera, oratorio, lieder, twentieth century art song, spirituals, musical theatre and jazz. Ms. Williams’s musicality and her clear expressive voice have made her fluent in many genres. She has performed to wide critical acclaim.

The programme for Sophisticated Soul at Queen’s Hall will include many favourites - Laudate Dominum, Mozart, Shubert’s Ave Maria, O Mio Babbino Caro, Puccini, a medley from Porgy & Bess and Spitrituals - Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child, Scandalize My Name and A’int Got Time to Die. Ms. Williams will also perform works by de Falla, Villa Lobos and Montsalvatge, Florence Price and Obradors. She will be accompanied on the piano by Brahm Goldhamer. The performance of this talented professional singer should not only bring enjoyment to all music lovers but give our talented young singers an opportunity to see a professional at work. Ms Williams holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto. After obtaining an A.R.C.T. for Singing Performance from the Royal Conservatory she received further training from teachers, Stephanie Bogle and New York-based Michael Warren, among others. Drama coaches have been Paula Citron and Tom Diamond. She has received intensive operatic training with the Royal Conservatory’s Opera Ensemble, the Creative Artists’ Workshops and Toronto Opera Repertoire.

Members of the audience will be greeted with a welcoming cocktail and are invited to meet the artist over drinks after the performance. Admission is $200 reserved seating; $170 unreserved seating. Patrons of Queen’s Hall enjoy a 10% discount on ticket prices.

Members of the Alejandro Latin Jazz Quartet

Alejandro Aviles Latin Jazz Quartet

Patrons were given the opportunity to present the Alejandro Aviles Jazz Quartet with the U.S Embassy.

The invitation came after the February/ March Spotlight but every effort was made to inform members. The turnout showed the interest of the Patrons in Jazz and particularly Latin Jazz. Some members of the audience were perplexed at the absence of a strong persistent Latin beat, others welcomed the presentation of real jazz. The quartet were a marvelous example of technical proficiency and interpretive jazz. And their brilliance showed itself when Murphy’s Law struck and the lead player Alejandro Aviles weak and ill with a Latin virus was only able to play in the second half and the 3 other players carried the first half. On the following day The Quartet conducted a workshop attended by both young aspiring jazz players and professions at the International School.

 Theatre in Alternative Spaces

Beef No Chicken

There’s a new permanent theatre space in town, Belmont to be exact, The Playwright’s Theatre, at the corner of Norfolk and Jerningham Avenue. Trinidad Theatre Workshop is presenting Derek Walcott’s Beef No Chicken a hilarious comedy written twenty odd years ago but oh so relevant to today’s scenario of corruption and crime. The cast is formidable, on stage are long standing actors Glenn Davis, Noel Blandin alternating with Leon Morenzie, Susan Hannays-Abraham and Stanley Marshall interacting with more recent performers, including Stefan Simmons, Tarel Laughlin, and Keino Swamber. Call 624 8502 for reservations.

News & Views - Spotlight from the Patrons of Queen's Hall

Veronica CollinsGoodbye to Veronica
She was a member of the Patrons’ small secretariat for a couple of years until she went on to NDATT. Veronica Collins arrived in Trinidad in 1980 and with her husband Shane and son Kirk was an exciting resource for any production and any party for that matter. She was an artist herself a sensitive designer, her dried floral arrangements were beautiful and was also a singer and a model. We extend our sympathy to Shane, Kirk and her sons from a first marriage, Steve and Dan.

Do you e-mail
More and more lovers of the arts have to depend on the electronic media to advertise their productions. The small advertisement in the papers no longer does the job. So we’ve started an e-newsletter which we used to market the recent jazz show and will use for all future events. e-mail us at hotfoot1@wow.net so that we can keep in touch.

Concert of Festival Champions - Marionettes ChoraleEntertainment for the Young
In 2005 Liliput Theatre celebrated their 30th anniversary. For their 31st year stage production they are presenting FLEW . Lilliput productions are unique, free flowing, full of dance, drama and fun. Wendell Manwarren is the director, Merylle Mahabir is the designer and of course the multitalented Miss Noble is the choreographer and artistic director. As usual the admission is unfashionably reasonable.

Recital 6: A Concert of Festival Champions
a presentation of The Marionettes Chorale featuring the outstanding talent of this year’s Music Festival Champions and regional winners including Feryal and Sameerah Qudourah, Vanessa Bushe, Johan Chuckaree, The Entertainers and Jeunes Agape. Showtime is 8 pm Wednesday 26th April at the Queen’s Hall. Tickets are $100, Patrons of Queen’s Hall enjoy a 10% discount and are available from Marionettes members and the Queen’s Hall Box Office. Reservations are strongly recommended for this biennial favourite. Sponsored by bpTT.
