National Sinfonia to start 4th year of performances with the Beethoven Symphony # 5 and Liam Teague’s arrangement of Mark Loquan’s Nostalgia

The National Sinfonia, directed by Jessel Murray, starts their fourth season of performances (2007-08)with the complete Beethoven Symphony # 5 and Mark Loquan’s Nostalgia (arranged by Liam Teague) on Sunday 19th August, 2007, at 6 PM, at Queen’s Hall.

This concert, under the patronage of his Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, will also feature two pieces for solo instruments with Orchestra and music for the stage.

Beethoven’s Symphony # 5 is one of the world’s most played and recognisable pieces of classical music. With its distinctive three chord start, concertgoers will be subject to the first complete performance of this work in Trinidad and Tobago and will join the legions of persons worldwide who have been thrilled with one of this composer’s most popular pieces. Nostalgia, written by Yara head, Mark Loquan, and originally arranged by Liam Teague for a steelband compilation compact disc: Pan in Education, has now been recast for orchestra and the Sinfonia, with its reputation for original programming, will present the work – another first.

In addition, the evenings programme features two solo pieces with orchestra: Concertmaster Marie-Noelle Wharton will play the ever popular Meditation from Thais, and first chair trumpeter Rellon Brown will perform the complete Hadyn Trumpet Concerto. The evening’s performance will round out with a Medley from the ever popular West Side Story.

As usual, the August concert is preceded by a rigorous workshop at the Centre for Creative and Festival Arts with tutors from Massachusetts, which sets the tone for the year’s performances. The Sinfonia, managed by the Orchestral Society of Trinidad and Tobago, continues to provide the finest age appropriate repertoire for this intergenerational orchestra. We invite you to come and share this evening of high quality entertainment for all.

The quality of their lives

Once again the Queen’s Hall Board of Management and the Patrons of Queen’s Hall organized a successful three week Theatre Camp for Young People. This year’s camp explored the life and music of David Rudder.

The Queen’s Hall Theatre Camp for Young People is particularly relevant to today’s society of violence and mayhem. Now extremely popular many ‘would be’ campers had to be turned away.

The reputation of the camp is based on years of hard work and perseverance, with support from Corporate bodies, NGOs, Steel Bands, artists and friends.

We particularly thank the artists who give up three weeks of their time to help the young people to recognize their talent, their creativity and learn the importance of discipline in their lives.

Special thanks to Noble Douglas the artistic director, Charlene Harris the Manager, Dougie Redon pan arranger and musician par excellence, and Lari Richardson artist and designer.

Solve your vacation reading problems !
The second hand book stall is a popular feature of the Patrons’ Annual Bar B Que. This year was no exception. However we got such a big response to our appeal for books that we still have lots of great material for your reading pleasure. We are in the process of identifying a venue for a dedicated sale and will let you know time and place as soon as it is finalized.

Caciques for Queen’s Hall
This issue of SPOTLIGHT goes to print before the CACIQUES are announced but we would like to give a SPOTLIGHT AWARD to Knolly Whiskey nominated for the lighting design award for his work in Fiddler on the Roof and The 3CanalBacchanalShow. The unassuming Whiskey who worked his magic under the trying and demanding conditions of the original Queen’s Hall is now able to show his true colours with the state of the art technology of the refurbished Hall. Way to go Whiskey!
