Il Modo D’amore
A short review
|
Il Modo d’Amore, the Way of Love,
was essentially the concept of the music
director June Nathaniel. Unable to present 3TENORS the
original concept for the concert, she put together an
evening of opera and German and French song with Ronald
Samm, tenor, Fritz Nothnagel-Gurley soprano, and Enrique
Ali, piano accompanist. As Ms. Nathaniel developed the
programme she introduced the Key choir for the Carmen
segment, the opening Brindisi or Drinking Song
from La Traviata and The Nun’s Chorus to
great effect. To use the Queen’s Hall stage to its
fullest Kathryn Chan was contracted as set designer,
Knolly Whiskey as lighting designer and Helmer Hilwig as
stage director. The result was a clean, minimalist,
abstract setting that related to the various selections
being presented but did not distract. Excerpts from the
operas La Traviata, Otello, Carmen, The Nun’s Chorus
from the operetta, Cassanova, Faure and Duparc, Brahms,
Neapolitan love songs were heard. It was an night of
melodic extravagance with Maurice Brash keeping the
audience informed and linking each scene with his
masterful word pictures.
Ronald Samm is not well
known in Trinidad although of the many Trinidadian
artists working in London and Europe he is perhaps the
most well exposed. So his strong operatic tenor voice
and assured presentation was a wonderful surprise.
Nothnagel-Gurley also surprised. Well known and liked on
the Trinidad stage for her light operatic renditions,
Fritz was in fine form, her voice clean, well modulated
and confident. |

Her Ave Maria from
Verdi’s Otello, Laura’s Song and Brahms were
particularly pleasing. The final scene from Carmen
“C’est Toi – C’est Moi” which brought herself,
Ronald and the chorus on stage was dramatic, tense,
poignant, it had us all holding our breaths and sitting
at the edge of our seats; a fitting finale to a great
evening’s entertainment. Ronald Samm, huge, confident, a
tenor in the Italian style commanded the Hall with his
large voice.
Moving easily through the
programme he charmed the audience with his romantic
Neapolitan songs, his French Melodie and of course his
role as Don Jose in the final confrontation with Carmen.
Enrique Ali, no stranger to Queen’s Hall, was the
quintessential accompanist, skillfully supportive yet
never overpowering. He said after the concert that he
found the Hall’s precious Steinway, refurbished by the
Patrons two years ago was now warm, resonant and
responsive to his touch.
Congratulations to all
concerned the singers, designers and organizers. It was
a thoroughly enjoyable evening, just the right length to
leave one wanting more I’d like to add. Forty-five
minutes each side of a fifteen minute intermission.
